Summary
The aim of the paper is to examine the existing nature protection system in light of biodiversity conservation, the principle of in dubio pro natura, as well as the right to a healthy environment in mutual interaction and to find an answer to the question – does the Latvian legal system provide a constitutional basis for making environmental laws more ecologically responsible? The author substantiates the thesis that a unified system of environmental constitutionalism, consisting of reconceptualized right to a healthy environment and environmental sustainability, paves the way for the protection of more ecocentric values and thus creates an opportunity to make environmental laws and their application practices more ecologically responsible.
