ANTIQUITAS VIVA: STUDIA CLASSICA

Collection of articles of the Department of Classical Philology, the Center for Hellenistic Studies and the Latin Culture Heritage Center, Faculty of Humanities, University of Latvia.

The idea for the Antiquitas Viva collection dates back to 2001, when the name Antiquitas viva. Studia Classica was still on the cover of the 645th volume of the Scientific Papers of the University of Latvia. As an independent collection, Antiquitas Viva was first published in 2005, then in 2009, 2014 and 2019. The title of the collection speaks for itself – the ancient world and its cultural phenomena are discovered as still (or anew) topical and present (the title plays with the concept of latinitas viva, i.e., Latin in modern active use).

Although the collection has so far been attached to international scientific conferences of the same name which are organized by the specialists of the Department of Classical Philology of the University of Latvia, it also accepts other research works relevant to the topic of the collection.

The aim of the collection is to unite specialists in the humanities of both the Baltic Sea States and the world in research on the study of ancient cultural heritage and its reception (including the aspect of cultural interaction). A certain overarching theme is also possible for the collection (so far: urbs aeterna, the comic and comicality, paideia, word in dictionary and text).

The collection of articles can also be supplemented with a part of the appendices which summarizes overviews of topical issues relevant to the field (especially in Latvia and in the Baltics), includes translations of texts from classical languages (Greek and Latin), and the like.

The languages of the collection are Latvian and English.

All non-English scholarly articles must be accompanied by the title, keywords and abstract in English. For scientific articles written in English, the translation of the title, keywords and abstract of the article into Latvian can be provided by the publishers of the collection.

All scientific articles in the collection have been double-blind peer reviewed.

All parties involved in the creation of the collection (editor, editorial board, authors and reviewers) must adhere to the ethics of publication. The guidelines for the actions of the editor, editorial board, and authors are in accordance with the COPE Code of Conduct for Journal Editors (publicationethics.org/resources/ code-conduct).

Responsibilities of the editor, reviewer and author

The collection editor ensures the anonymity of the review. Based on the reviewers' evaluations, as well as making sure of their quality and objectivity (the reviewer's opinion follows only from the content of the article), the editor decides on the publication of the article in the collection, and the decision is notified to the author.
It is the duty of the reviewer of the article to maintain objectivity, confidentiality, to verify in good conscience, within the limits of his / her competence, the quality of the article (including references, appropriate list of sources).
In case the reviewer is unsure of his / her competence or encounters a conflict of interest, the reviewer should inform the editor of the collection. In this case, another reviewer is invited to evaluate the article.
Authors follow the instructions for submitting articles (guidelines for submitting articles). Authors should take into account that works previously published in whole or in part elsewhere or submitted for publication must not be submitted to the collection.

The frequency of the collection publishing: starting from 2022, the frequency of the collection publishing – every 2 years.
