ANTIQUITAS VIVA: STUDIA CLASSICA

Antiquitas viva. Studia Classica is a double‑blind peer‑reviewed journal dedicated to the study of ancient cultural heritage, issued by the Department of European Languages’ Classical Philologists, the Centre for Hellenic Studies, and the Latin Cultural Heritage Centre of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Latvia.

ORIGINS & DEVELOPMENT

The idea for the Antiquitas Viva dates back to 2001, when Antiquitas viva. Studia Classica was published as volume 645 of the Scientific Papers of the University of Latvia. As an independent edition, Antiquitas Viva was first published in 2005, then in 2009, 2014 and 2019.
The title of the Antiquitas viva speaks for itself – the ancient world and its cultural phenomena are discovered as still (or anew) topical and present (the title plays on the concept of latinitas viva, i.e., Latin in modern active use).

AIM, SCOPE & PUBLICATION

The journal aims primarily to bring together humanities specialists from the Baltic Sea region and Europe, while also including researchers worldwide who study ancient cultural heritage and its reception, with attention to interdisciplinary and cross‑cultural interactions.

Although the Antiquitas Viva has so far been attached to international scientific conferences of the same name which are organized by the classical philologists of the University of Latvia, it also accepts other research works relevant to the topic of the journal.

A certain overarching theme is also possible for the journal (so far: urbs aeterna, the comic and comicality, paideia, word in dictionary and text).

Scholarly articles in the volume may also be supplemented by an appendix containing reviews of important developments in the field (especially in Latvia and the Baltics), translations of texts from classical languages (Greek and Latin), and other related materials.

From 2026 the journal is scheduled to be an annual publication, issued once a year. The submission deadline for each issue is 1 February of the relevant year. Articles submitted after 1 February will be peer‑reviewed and considered for publication in the following year’s issue.

The languages of the journal are Latvian and English.
All scholarly articles published in the journal undergo double‑blind peer review.

Publication of articles in the journal is free of charge. The funders of each issue are acknowledged in that issue. The journal is not available by subscription.

ETHICS

All parties involved in producing the journal (editor, editorial board, authors, and reviewers) must adhere to publication ethics. The conduct guidelines for the editor, editorial board, and authors conform to the COPE Code of Conduct for Journal Editors (publicationethics.org/resources/ code-conductGuidance) or an equivalent standard.

EDITOR’S RESPONSIBILITIES

The journal editor ensures the anonymity of the review. Based on the reviewers' evaluations, as well as making sure of their quality and objectivity (the reviewer's opinion follows only from the content of the article), the editor decides on the publication of the article in the journal, and the decision is notified to the author.

The journal editor and editorial board reserve the right to reject any manuscript suspected of plagiarism or found to violate the University of Latvia's Academic Ethics Codex or Guidelines for the Use of Artificial Intelligence.

REVIEWER’S RESPONSIBILITIES

Reviewers must maintain objectivity and confidentiality. Reviewers must, to the best of their ability and within their competence, verify the manuscript's quality (including references and proper listing of sources). If any reviewer lacks confidence in competence or has a conflict of interest, the reviewer must inform the journal editor; another reviewer will then be appointed to evaluate the manuscript.

AUTHOR’S RESPONSIBILITY

Authors follow the guidelines for submitting articles (guidelines for submitting articles). Authors should take into account that works previously published in whole or in part elsewhere or submitted for publication must not be submitted to the journal.

By submitting a manuscript, all authors confirm their agreement to its open‑access publication under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 (CC BY NC 4.0) license.
