Crypto-assets in Legal System of Latvia: the Short History

Summary
By adopting a digital strategy, the European Union has moved towards the goal of making the digital environment work for the benefit of society. One of the steps towards achieving this goal is the regulation, which provides a legal framework for crypto-assets (MiCA). By including crypto-assets as a legal institution in the Latvian legal system, the regulation has brought about changes to the existing system. The aim of this article is to examine not only the legal environment in which crypto-assets were included, but also the interaction of crypto-assets with legal objects such as virtual assets. Given that a discourse related to crypto-assets had already been established in society before the adoption of MiCA, this article will focus on the fact that the existing discourse has influenced the formation of the legal system.
